I started my business in…

1999.

This is how it came to be…
I was unsure about a career path when I finished high school, so I continued working at a supermarket while trying out a number of different fields at community colleges in Orange County. It wasn’t until seven years later (yes, I had been taking college classes the whole time) that my fiance (at the time — now married 16 years) got me an SLR camera our first Christmas together (yes, I did propose after nine months). I started Photography 101 that spring and that was it — I was sold on photography. I actually took some convincing that being a photographer was an actual job — it was too fun! This is what I had been searching for.

A little bit about my background…
I am a daddy first and foremost. We have a 13 year old daughter and an 11 year old son. I am a husband second to an amazing woman that amazes me with her bravery, smarts, and most of all her heart, daily. Along with photography, I love to mountain bike (I’ve been riding over 20 years and started racing again a couple of years ago).

A little bit about my background in photography…
After taking all the photo classes at Orange Coast College that interested me and after earning first place in their first annual student exhibition, I decided I was ready to join the real world and be a real photographer. At this point I had not even thought about being a wedding photographer even after my own wedding. I finally quit my job at the supermarket and took a solo roadtrip with my camera and my bike to Alaska — sleeping in the back of my truck and eating top ramen and PB&Js off my tailgate. I remember processing some slide film (not good digital yet) in Vancouver and nearly sobbing at the results. I was blown away at the beauty I had created of the Western US coast. This was one of the best moments in my life. It was so clear and I was confident that I could do this! I returned home after nearly eight weeks later to find a photo job. While I was gone, my wife met a woman in the wedding industry and after learning about my trip asked if I would ever shoot a wedding, so I had a meeting with her. I shot a couple weddings for her and was hooked. Flash forward 15 years and 700 or so weddings and I’m still loving the challenge of capturing the perfect moment in amazing light and delivering these moments to my clients.

I find inspiration…
In nature, in all genres of photography and all other art forms.

The perfect wedding day signature cocktail…
Craft beer.

One or two words to describe my style…
Real. Relaxed. Natural.

I love weddings because…
The best part about weddings are the emotions and I love to be the lucky soul that gets to document them all — the joy, the excitement, the anxiety, and sometimes the sorrow (of missing family members usually).

Something every couple should know after they get engaged…
Make it a goal to really connect with a photographer’s work AND their personality.

My best advice to couples for the big day…
Relax and be in the moment. The worst thing is when a bride or groom says that they can’t remember the day at the end of it. The best is when people are crying and hugging all day long — really feeling it.

If I could have any other occupation in the world, I would…
Be a photographer — really!

If I had no limits, my dream vacation would be…
I have always dreamed of taking my kids on a safari in Africa to see the animals that may be extinct by the time they are grandparents. We actually adopted a group called BigLife.org as our non-profit to support at Studio EMP. Started by a fellow photographer, they have created a network of ranger stations, rangers, jeeps, etc. to battle poachers that kill for profit.

Deserted island. Three objects? Go…
A knife, water filter and matches.

My favorite sports team is…
My kids’ soccer teams.

My favorite restaurant of all time is…
Wahoo’s.

My biggest pet peeve is…
Arrogance — we are all equal and no one deserves to be treated like they are less than that.

My favorite holiday is…
Christmas to be with family.

The best day of my life…
Hiking, biking, camping in the redwood forests with my wife and kids… and Lu.

Three words to describe my dream wedding…
It Already Happened.

My favorite staycation spot is…
Crystal Cove Cottages.

If money were no object, I would…
If money were no object all the natural land on the planet would be protected from development and everyone on the planet would have food, water and shelter.

I believe…
That no matter your religion we all need to help and support one-another, and when I say all I mean even strangers. Mean people suck — ask yourself if you are mean or if you are a helper. We are in this together, people.

My favorite thing on my desk is…
My Probar.

Favorite local hangout is…
The Fullerton Loop.

Favorite local restaurant…
Burger Parlor in Downtown Fullerton

Something most people don’t know about me…
Most people don’t know that I love to make all sorts of things — not just photographs. I love to weld, work with wood, and anything I can get my hands on. I’m a maker.

LOVE STORY
Passing through the halls of U.C. Davis Medical School in between classes, Chirag could not help but notice the beautiful Deepika. Although the courtship lasted over several months, Chirag claims he knew right from the beginning there was something special about the damsel with the diamond smile.

LOVE NOTE
This dreamy technicolor celebration, vibrant in every detail, looks just as luscious as any Bollywood motion picture.
